A DEVON junior school has been transformed in just three years and pupils now thoroughly enjoy their lessons and achieve above average standards, according to a new report from independent education inspectors.
Three years ago South Molton United Church of England Junior School was judged to have serious weaknesses.
But inspectors say that, with outstanding leadership and management, South Molton has made remarkable improvements.
Every aspect of school life is now either good or outstanding.
"The results speak for themselves, " say the inspectors. "The headteacher, governors and staff have worked together exceptionally well to transform the fortunes of the school.
"Serious weaknesses have been eliminated and replaced by significant strengths.
"Inadequate achievement has become good and below average standards are now above average."
The inspectors, from the school standards agency Ofsted, say that the improved academic success has raised the self-esteem of the whole school community.
"Its members have been energised by the confidence that comes from knowing they are doing a good job," they say.
"Staff and pupils thoroughly enjoy their time in school and are rightly proud of their successes."
One delighted parent told the inspectors: "The school is a great one to be part of."
The inspectors report that there have been significant improvements in all aspects of the Devon County Council school's provision.
Teaching and learning are good with many of the lessons they observed being excellent. The curriculum is good and makes learning relevant and interesting.
"Pupils feel safe and happy in school, know the importance of staying fit and eating healthily and enjoy their community responsibilities," says the report.
"Relationships are good, behaviour is almost always good and sometimes excellent."
The inspectors say the governors' role in supporting the school and promoting improvement has been vital and South Molton is in a good position to keep on improving.
To do this, the school should help pupils improve their handwriting skills and help all teachers match the high standards set by the best.
Delighted headteacher Jan Sealy said: "This splendid report from Ofsted is due to the hard work of everyone connected with the school and the welcome support of the wider community.
"They have all worked together as a team and they can all share in this success.
"We are not complacent, however, and we are determined to build on these excellent foundations."
