BOOKLOVERS from across Devon are expected to join five authors for a special day in Honiton in March, which is the second in a series organised by Devon County Council's Library Service.
Authors Katie Fforde, Michael Jecks, Imogen Parker, Simon Hall and Maria McCarthy will gather for a Readers' Day of talks, panel discussions and workshops, as well as displays, competitions and book signings. Fans will also get the chance to chat informally to the authors, publishing staff and fellow readers.
Katie Fforde is a best-selling romantic novelist already popular across Devon's libraries. Witty and informative about all aspects of writing, Katie, who lives in Gloucestershire, claims that most of her experiences end up in her books, as she hates to waste anything!
Michael Jecks lives on Dartmoor and is a popular author of 18 medieval mystery books, Michael is extremely knowledgeable about Devon's medieval past and a lively raconteur.
Imogen Parker is a former literary agent and author of several novels. She lives in Poole. Her latest book The Time of Our Lives was published to critical acclaim and her workshops are back by popular demand.
Simon Hall is already well-known to many as a BBC Crime Correspondent for the South West based in Plymouth. Simon's first book A Popular Murder draws on his knowledge of crime reporting, the media, and the Devon countryside where the story is set.
Maria McCarthy is a Sidmouth-based author and lecturer. Her book The Girls' Guide to losing your L-Plates has featured in several newspapers - as well as The Chris Evans Show on Radio 2.
The day will be hosted by Guy Pringle, editor of newBooks magazine,
The event follows a sell-out day at the Flavel Centre in Dartmouth, which featured authors Xinran, Judy Astley, Imogen Parker and Simon Kernick
The event is aimed at attracting book enthusiasts ranging from members of reading groups, to solitary readers and literary festival-goers.
Executive Member for Culture, Cllr Sheila Hobden, said: "We hope this day will inspire readers by introducing new books and authors, and fostering a shared love of reading. It is a chance to spend a whole day in the company of fellow enthusiasts and authors, and leave with a goody bag of books, and, we hope, plenty of inspiration."
The day has been supported by Honiton local member Councillor Barry Nicholson, with additional money from the Devon County Council Library Service and a number of publishers.
Councillor Nicholson, said: "I was delighted to contribute £1000 from the County Committee Fund for this project, and hope local residents make the most of this wonderful opportunity."
There will be a panel discussion with the four authors then a chance to join a smaller group with an individual author. Lunch is provided and there is a competition to win some mystery prizes. After lunch the secrets of the publishing trade will be revealed followed by another author group.
The event will be held at St Rita's, Ottery Moor Lane, Honiton EX14 1AP on Thursday 15 March 2007.
Application forms can be picked up at varying points around the town and Honiton Mobile Library or people can call Honiton Library 01404 42818. When people apply they should name the two authors' workshops of their choice, and can then pick up the two books from Honiton Library in advance of the day.
The day is open to all, both members and non-library members, and tickets are £8. Closing date for applications is February 22nd, but early booking is advised.
Directions to St Rita's can be found on the application form. Although there is ample parking, car sharing is encouraged.
