A new card scheme, soon to be introduced in Okehampton, will provide assistance to people with learning disabilities and to the business community.
Under the scheme, people with learning disabilities who are supported by Devon County Council to be more involved in their community and to use local facilities in town will be given a card to present to others if they need help or finding it difficult to be understood.
Shop keepers and other service providers linked to the scheme will also carry a similar card with contact details to ring if they need help to provide assistance.
Participating shops and services will display a notice in their window to advertise their membership to the scheme.
The card scheme is being trialled in Donalds, the popular men's outfitters in Okehampton.
Donald Rooke, Owner of Donalds said:
"We think it's a great scheme. We do sometimes have customers with disabilities needing a little more time spent with them. We're pleased to help in anyway we can, so this scheme helps us help them. We know who to contact, and people know because of the poster in our window that we can help if they need assistance."
David Skrzypczak, who is supported by Devon County Council's Puzzletree day services in the town, said:
"Sometimes I talk very quickly and get embarrassed. It would help people understand what I'm trying to say. And they could phone someone else if they need help to understand me.
"It will give people confidence to shop more independently, especially if they are nervous."
Margaret Rye said:
"I would be more comfortable because if I had a fit, they could help quickly if I need it."
John Tudball, who has hearing difficulties said:
"I go into town on my own sometimes and I feel cross when people don't realise that I can't hear. This card will help in those situations."
Devon County Council's Executive Member for Adult and Community Services, Cllr John Rawlinson said:
"It sounds easy, but this scheme can make a lot of difference to people's confidence to visit places in town. We're yet to talk to the local Chamber of Trade about it, but from the feedback we've received, we think businesses will welcome it because everyone's a winner. We'll see how well it works here in Okehampton before possibly rolling out the scheme to other parts of the county."
Devon County Councillor for Okehampton, Cllr Christine Marsh, said:
"I am pleased to support any initiative which brings better understanding and independence for all concerned. Donald is already one of Okehampton's leading citizens, so it comes as no surprise that he is trialling this important scheme. I know it will be a huge success as all the other traders become involved."
