New cycle route from Exmouth to Lympstone opens

From Adrian Lane, Exeter 383262, December 19, 2007

CYCLISTS in East Devon have been given an early Christmas present with the opening of a new cycle route.

The 1.5 mile route linking Exmouth to Lympstone is now open to the public. Stretching from Marine Way in Exmouth to Sowden Lane in Lympstone, the £2.2 million scheme has taken 15 months to build and has been completed on schedule and within budget.

The link between the two communities is the latest phase of the Exe Estuary Trail, which aims to provide better access along the Estuary which is both a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). The route also forms part of the National Cycle Network.

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said: "During the design and construction phases of the project, every effort has been made to mitigate the impact on the environment and to protect the special status of the surrounding area. Even though it's only just opened, people are already using the route and they're finding it's a really pleasurable cycle ride.

"Cyclists can enjoy the wonderful scenery while keeping themselves fit and doing their bit for the environment. We're hoping the route will provide enjoyment for visitors and residents alike, whether they are using it for leisure or as a sustainable way to travel to work."

Work is currently ongoing to provide seating, cycle stands, way markers and information panels on this section. A community arts project is also being organised for the retaining walls just south of Sowden Lane.

The official opening ceremony of this section of path is being planned for Friday 29 February 2008, with a community fun day expected to be held on Saturday 1 March 2008. Exmouth Town Council and Lympstone Parish Council, who have supported the delivery of the project, are also involved in organising these events.
