Crediton flies the flag for Devon

From Janet Kipling, Exeter 383654, April 10, 2008

The Devon flag will soon by flying proudly above Crediton.

Crediton Town Council is amongst a number of local councils that have requested their own flag from Devon County Council.

The concept of the Devon flag started on BBC Devon's website and the design by Ryan Sealey was voted for in an online poll.

Devon County Council has since leant its enthusiastic support to the flag. The distinctive green, white and black flag is often flown at County Hall, and it has become a common sight across Devon and further afield at sporting events and recently at the Last Night of the Proms.

Devon County Council has offered a limited number of flags to local councils so they can follow suit.

The flag emphasises the county's history, especially its Celtic roots. The green symbolises the fields of Devon, white for the sea and our china clay industries and the black edge of the cross symbolises the granite mica of the moors.

Devon County Council Leader Brian Greenslade said: "I am pleased that the flag will now be visible in Crediton and that the Town Council is joining us in this celebration of our county. Enthusiasm for the Devon flag has gone from strength to strength, symbolising the pride that people have in our historic county and the surrounding area. It is an instantly recognisable symbol for Devon."

Devon County Councillor for Crediton Nick Way, who is also a Town Councillor said: "Having a pride in your community is important. What is common to both Crediton and Devon is their clear, historic and interlinked identities. I look forward to seeing the Devon flag flying over the Town Square."

Town Mayor and Chairman Cllr Joyce Harris from Crediton Town Council said: "I will be very pleased and delighted to receive the Devon flag from Cllr Greenslade, on behalf of the people of Crediton. The Devon flag will help reinforce the town's pride in its County and will complement the historical links represented by the Crediton flag."

The presentation of the flag by Cllr Brian Greenslade to Cllr Joyce Harris will take place on Friday 2 May at 10am at the Town Square, Crediton.
