Cyclists confirm that Exeter is a cycle-friendly city

From Adrian Lane, Exeter 383262, June 30,2008

CYCLISTS who took part in Cycle Sunday have declared Exeter a cycle-friendly city.

More than 1,000 people attended the event and 350 cyclists took part in the six and 12 mile challenges alongside the River Exe. Out of 100 people surveyed, 75% of them agreed that Exeter has become more cycle friendly thanks to the 18km of new and improved routes implemented by Devon County Council and partners. This includes the recently opened trail from Exmouth to Lympstone.

Cycle Sunday, was organised by Devon County Council's Cycle Exeter team in partnership with Exeter City Council, Ashfords Solicitors and FORCE Cancer Charity as "a celebration of cycling for everyone." 80% of those who completed the survey gave the event a rating of eight out of ten or above.

Over £1,000 was raised for FORCE Cancer Charity through registration fees alone.

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said: "It was wonderful to be present and see so many people, and especially families, turn out on their bikes. This was a fun event which raised vital funds for charity, but at the same time it has also given us some important feedback on what people think of their local cycle routes. It's encouraging that people have recognised the County Council's commitment to cycling and we will continue to improve routes and aim to get more people cycling."

Councillor Douglas Hull, Vice Chairman of Devon County Council who officially opened the event with Lord Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Paul Smith, said: "It was 'fun Sunday' as far as I was concerned. I think everyone there enjoyed it, especially the children. It was interesting getting back on a bicycle again after 55 years. I just managed to stay on despite the tyres feeling like 50p pieces! It was wonderful to open such a well organised event and a great effort by the County Council and all of the sponsors to get people cycling."

It was the fifth anniversary of the event, which was one of 1,200 around the country organised to celebrate National Bike Week.
