Work due to start to replace culvert

From Adrian Lane, Exeter 383262, January 23, 2007

WORK to replace a culvert near Chulmleigh is due to start on Monday 19 February.

The £20,000 project to replace the defective culvert under the A377 near Leigh Cross is expected to take three weeks.

Because the culvert is under a section of road with little or no verge, working space is very limited and cannot be carried out safely without a road closure.

Work will be carried out by contractor South West Highways and will get underway during half term week to reduce the impact of the closure.

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "Although it may cause some inconvenience to motorists the works have been planned to minimise disruption. The culvert is showing signs of weakness so its replacement is essential."

Devon County Councillor for Chulmleigh and Swimbridge, Cllr Joe Tucker, said: "I'm pleased that any problems with the culvert will be resolved. The work will safeguard that stretch of road for the future."

A diversion will be put in place as local routes are not suitable for HGVs. The alternative route will divert traffic via Crediton on the A377, Tiverton on the A3072, South Molton on the A361 and Kings Nympton on the B3226.
