Repair work progressing well at Capstone Hill

From Adrian Lane, Exeter 383262, November 20, 2007

WORK on strengthening the retaining wall supporting part of the South West Coast Path at Ilfracombe is progressing well.

Councillor Geoff Fowler, Devon County Councillor for Ilfracombe, will visit the site at Capstone Hill on Thursday (22 November), to see the improvements that have been made since work started in September.

The project, which is part of Devon County Council's Bridge Assessment and Strengthening capital programme, should be completed early in the new year, depending on weather conditions.

The project involves strengthening the existing masonry retaining wall which supports a footpath (Footpath No 92) carrying the South West Coast Path around Capstone Hill.

Careful consideration has had to be given to the method of construction and sequence of work, given the very restricted access and exposed position of the site. Mini piles and a new stone faced revetment were constructed first, taking the work face above all but the high spring tides in calm weather. All the rock anchors are now installed complete with temporary capping plates thus ensuring that the wall has been made stable. Work is currently progressing with the new reinforced concrete face and masonry cladding.

Councillor Geoff Fowler, Devon County Councillor for Ilfracombe, said: "This is further welcome investment by the County Council in Ilfracombe that will keep the coastal path open for residents and visitors. These defences are essential to maintain the coastal path which is vital to our local tourism industry."

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said: "The site is very exposed to the elements, and it takes the full brunt of winds and seas off the Bristol Channel, and in rough weather I understand that spray has often crashed over the top of the wall. The workmen are doing well in challenging conditions, and the completed scheme will provide a safer footpath around the headland which is a popular walk for many locals and visitors."

To ensure the safety of the workforce and the public, the footpath will be closed and a short diversion route signed while the work is ongoing. Access will be available at all times for emergency and maintenance vehicles.

Devon County Council has designed, and will be supervising the works. The main contractor is Bude based, Macplant Construction Ltd.
