THE temporary one-way traffic system leading to Branscombe will be stood down in response to an improving situation in the village. But Devon County Council and Devon and Cornwall Police are on stand-by to reintroduce traffic controls swiftly if the need arises.
A County Council spokesman said: "The one-way system has done its job for now and with security established on the beach and the salvage operation underway, that degree of rigorous control over access is no longer needed.
"In consultation with the Police and taking into account the views of residents and businesses, we've agreed to stand the one-way system down, but the position will be reviewed daily as the operation to remove containers from the MSC Napoli develops. We are ready to move in swiftly to ensure village safety and order is protected.
"Meanwhile businesses in the village are open as normal and visitors who wish to enjoy Branscombe for its charm and hospitality are welcome. Motorists are advised to drive with care and follow the signed access routes to Branscombe from the A3052.
"The check-point at the Mason's Arms restricting vehicle access to the beach remains in place. The check point at the village hall is being moved back towards the Mason's Arms to divert traffic back to the A3052 via Sellar's Wood Hill.
"A clearway order remains in place to prevent obstructive parking on the C364 road from the Hollyhead Road (B3174) junction through to the C67, down into the village square, and all the way through to the beach. This is to allow unobstructed access for salvage vehicles and buses. There will be exemptions to permit residential access.
"Sections of the coastal footpath remain closed for public safety, but at all points of closure these temporary restrictions are signed and where an alternative route or diversion is available these are also publicised. Information is available at: www.southwestcoastpath.com."
