30mph speed limit extended in Axminster

From Adrian Lane, Exeter 383262, August 22, 2008

NEW 30mph signs are to be unveiled in Axminster thanks to the speed limit being extended by Devon County Council.

£1,000 funding for the scheme in Willhay Lane, Axminster, has been allocated by Councillor Douglas Hull from the County Council's East Devon County Committee.

The order has been provided to improve the road safety for residents. The extended 30mph zone covers an extra 240 metres of a residential area that was previously subject to the national speed limit.

Councillor Douglas Hull, local Devon County Councillor for Axminster, who will unveil the signs in Willhay Lane at 11am on Thursday 28 August, said: "It's essential to bring speed limits down, especially as this is a main thoroughfare which is used by a lot of people as it's the safest route from the town centre to the sports centre."

The scheme costs have covered advertising the order and providing the traffic signs to ensure that the limit is enforceable.

The County Council has eight County Committees that have budgets from which Committee Members can allocate grants to local community groups or projects that will make a big difference to people's lives, in line with the Council's strategic plan.
