Stabilisation works on A381

From Pam Newby, Exeter 383262, May 15,2008

Stabilisation of the stretch of the A381 between Totnes and Newton Abbot is currently being carried out by Devon County Council.

Work on the steep highway embankment that supports the A381 between Brutus Bridge and Pine Ridge adjacent to Littlehempston Woods is now nearing completion.

So far 771 steel soil nails, each six metres long, and 2,000 square metres of steel netting have been used to stabilise the embankment. In addition to this a new 30m long three metre high gabion retaining structure has also been constructed.

The next stage, before the road can be resurfaced, is foundation works to support a new safety barrier. Whilst this work is being undertaken the existing barrier will be removed so there will not be a barrier in place for several weeks.

To ensure vehicle safety, traffic is being restricted to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic lights. The work will take five weeks.
