Devon County Show

“DEVON is a way of life, be part of it” is the invitation to this year’s Devon County Show, and Devon County Council will be on hand at the three day event to explain how it is playing its part.

As the custodians of Devon, the County Council is striving to make Devon England’s “greenest county”, campaigning for all of us to care for our environment and do our bit to tackle global warming.

There are plenty of ways that visitors to the County Council’s marquee (stand 342, road 8) can get involved and do their bit, starting by joining the “Do It For Devon” campaign to cut domestic carbon emissions.

The Climate Change Roadshow is supporting the campaign, with expert staff on hand to help people understand what causes climate change and how we can all make a difference.

Devon County Council Leader, Councillor Brian Greenslade, said: " The 'Do it for Devon' campaign has captured people’s imagination and we are making significant strides that have seen Devon become England’s greenest county. The climate change roadshow is a great asset in helping achieve that, travelling around the county to reach as many people as possible.

“The Devon County Show has proven to be a consistently good forum for us to meet the people of Devon and find out their views on our work and a wide range of issues affecting the county. Everything that makes Devon special is here – whether it’s local produce, livestock, our countryside and environment, or tourism and leisure – and we’re all proud to be part of it. We can all make a difference for Devon!"

Devon County Council helps care for two World Heritage Sites and a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The county can also boast more green tourism businesses and more organic food producers than any other county in the UK, and it’s among the top three counties for recycling.

Devon's 3,200 miles of public rights of way are an important part of our countryside and officers will be on hand with maps to guide people on how they can explore the area.

For those who would rather get out and about on two wheels, Cycle Exeter will be encouraging people to get on their bike in Exeter and Devon. If you need inspiration, Andrei Burton, Devon County Council’s cycling ambassador and Britain’s top mountain bike trials rider will be showing exactly how it’s done with regular demonstrations of his riding skills.

As if all that is not enough, there is plenty more on offer, with energy saving prizes up for grabs in the Renewable Energy 4 Devon competition and a free low energy light bulb for everyone who enters. There is also a chance to win a goody bag of delicious local food in The Great Devon Quiz, presented by BBC Radio Devon’s Douglas Mounce.

The County Show starts on Thursday 17 May and runs until Saturday 19 May.
