Council Tax

This Years Council Tax

The amount of council tax you pay varies, depending on the value of your house (or other dwelling) as determined by the Valuation Office. Property values are grouped together for taxation purposes into categories known as tax bands.

The following list shows you how much Council Tax Devon County Council charges for each band for 2007/08, which represent an increase of 4.75%.

£ £
Band A £  682.62 Band E £1,251.47
Band B £  796.39 Band F £1,479.01
Band C £  910.16 Band G £1,706.55
Band D £1,023.93 Band H £2,047.86

Your total council tax bill will also include taxes payable to the police authority, the Fire and Rescue Service and the district council. There may also be further taxes payable to your local parish or town council.

Up until 2003-04 the county council paid for the Fire and Rescue Service, and the cost was included in the county council tax bill. From 2004-05 onwards the Fire and Rescue Service is responsible for setting its own level of tax.

Council taxes are collected by district councils on behalf of all the local authorities operating in their area. Your local district council will be able to help you with queries regarding the total tax bill, including payment instalments, tax discounts or eligibility for Council Tax Benefit.
