Youth Offending

ASSET Assessment Profile

The 'ASSET' assessment profile is a tool we use to assess why you have committed a crime and how to prevent you offending again.

Assessment Profile

ASSET, How is it Used?

ASSET is a national format, which the youth justice board expects youth offending teams to use in their work with all young people.

It has to be used for all work carried out by youth offending teams following:

  • A final warning;
  • In preparing a court report;
  • Following sentence from court;

The ASSET form will be completed at different stages during the time the youth offending team is working with you:

  • At the start;
  • During the work or programme you are undertaking;
  • At the end of the period of work.

It is used to assist in deciding what work should be undertaken with you, how it is progressing and how successful it has been.

ASSET, What does it involve?

The ASSET format consists of a number of different parts:

  • A main asset assessment form which will be completed by the youth offending team worker. It asks questions about all aspects of your life, why you offended, how you have reacted to this, and what risk there might be of you offending again. To complete this a youth offending team worker will ask for information from you, your school or other agencies that know you.
  • A serious harm risk assessment. This will only be completed when the youth offending team worker feels that your behaviour may be a serious risk to other people in the community.
  • Young people's assessment. This is a separate form which asks you to record in your own words or terms what may have caused you to offend, any things that are concerning you, and what you think should happen to you next. You can complete this yourself or get help from anyone else if you want.

Asset assessments have been kept electronically since the 1st October 2000. This is integrated into our monitoring system YOIS, (Youth Offending Information System) which we started inputting to on the1st January 2000. Case management has been recorded onto YOIS since the 1st January 2001.
