May - Body and Mind

This month we celebrate the links between reading and health. Along with displays in many libraries, events celebrating Adult Learners Week, Baby massage sessions and healthy eating talks highlight how important reading can be to general health and wellbeing. There are also lots of events planned for half-term at the end of the month, along with a good sprinkling of authors to meet in libraries - check What's On here.

We’re also taking part in the national campaign to encourage people to join their local library, so if you aren’t already a member, now's a great time to join!

There will be a competition to find the youngest member of the library service with a £100 worth of Mothercare vouchers for the winner, along with some books from the Early Learning Centre for the runner-up, and an opportunity to take home a free board book if you are under 3 and join at a number of smaller libraries during May. (Ashburton, Bampton, Combe Martin, Moretonhampstead, Stoke Fleming, Uffculme)

M@x made his debut appearance in real life on April 28th at Exeter Central Library, and will be appearing at the Devon County Show, 15-17th May, so look out for him there, and if you join the library at the show you can have your name entered into our special prize draw to win a fabulous Devon Hamper (for adults) or £25 book-token (for under 16’s).

Devon is celebrating reading throughout the year, in many different ways so call in to your nearest library and see what is happening.

Our Read, Ride, Relax competition continues throughout May - so there's still plenty of time to enter for the chance to win a digital camera.

Reading is everywhere and it’s not just about books: What about
newspapers, magazines, comics, graphic novels, short stories, braille, subtitles in films, text message, websites, online games, computer screens, blogs, signs, emails, audio books, podcasts, websites on your mobile, storytelling and many more?
