Local Studies
Location? Location? Location?
For the last two summer the Westcountry Studies Library has asked the public for help in putting names and places to some of their unidentified pictures.
So successful was this exercise - well over a third of the pictures were identified each year - that the library is again turning to YOU for help.
This year the Westcountry Studies Library has dug deep into its holdings again, and produced a new and exciting display of unidentified historic pictures - mostly photographs - from the Library's collections. All the pictures have some strong feature that will hopefully help identification - lots of distinctive houses, churches, a reservoir, ships - and even a remarkable photograph of a posh girls' night out! (see our 'virtual postcards').
There will be displays of these pictures in the foyer of Exeter Central Library and in the Westcountry Studies Library from 16th - 29th June inclusive. After that the entire exhibition will be on display in the Westcountry Studies Library until mid-July.
You can also visit the online exhibition anytime on the Local Studies website - which will include updates on the locations that have since been identified. If you have any ideas about the locations in these pictures, please get in touch with us:

We have turned 4 of our unidentified locations into 'virtual postcards'. Please feel free to email them to anyone who may be able to help or if you think you know the location, simply email the card back to westcountry.library@devon.gov.uk with your suggestion.
Please remember to quote the P&D number (Prints and Drawings number) in any communication you may send us, so that we can be sure we know which picture you are commenting on.
