The last school that we sent Stanley to was Nodehill Primary all the way along the coast, on the Isle of Wight. They treated him very well and sent him on all kinds of adventures around the Island. Here’s Stanley’s diary from his time there……

Flat Stanley

Chapter 1: Free at last!

I leaped out of my envelope - at last I was free, but was I? A kind lady in what looked like an office told me that I am at Nodehill Middle School on the Isle of Wight. She said that this is the biggest middle school on the Isle of Wight and the town is called Newport. She arranged for me to be in year 6 for the day and she warned me that it might be tiring going up all the stairs to the year 6 classroom. This is the story of my adventure which will lead me out of the school and around the island on a bus tour.

Chapter 2: A typical school day at Nodehill

Nodehill Primary SchoolI headed up the corridor, the school seemed really big and I remember thinking - I hope I don't get lost. After registration and daily notices I am told that I will be joining a year 6 class for the day. My first lesson of the day is English with Miss Radcliff's set 7. English class. I join them in the library where the children are choosing books to read. It is a large library full of lovely books. We spend the lesson picking books to take home and reading.

The bell rings and the children tell me it is maths next and we are off to the ICT suite, yippee! The Nodehill children are very lucky as they have four ICT rooms. We are going to the year seven one. It is an L-shaped room with lots of computers. We spend part of the lesson here and then return to the classroom where we play games on a thing called an interactive whiteboard. All of the classrooms are very big and they have all got these interactive whiteboards linked to the teachers computer. The bell rings and a boy called Peter tells me it is break time and takes me out into the playground. Peter asked "Would you like a snack Flat Stanley?"

"Yes please." I replied

We went to the kitchen doors where Peter kindly brought me an apple juice and a piece of toast, which was flat like me! The bell goes and it's back to lessons, music time! The music room at Nodehill is in the oldest part of the school at the top of the building right under the roof. I had a go on a big drum and made lots of noise.

The fourth lesson of the morning was science in science lab 2. I was very scared as the children were using Bunsen Burners and as I am made of paper and plastic I could burn very easily. Having spotted another room on the way to the science lab, I sneaked out of the lesson to have a look in a massive computer room that was nearby. All the children were on the computers making power point presentations and adding animation, it looked really good fun.

School DinnersSoon the bell went and it was lunchtime - I was starving. I went into the hall where everyone was having lunch, it was very noisy. Mr Morris (who I later found out was the headmaster) showed me where Mr M's was and I got a cheese and ham wrap then I sat down at a table. After I had my wrap I was still hungry and very thirsty so I went and got a drink and pudding from the hot meals counter. As soon as I had eaten I went out to the playground and played It with some of the boys. They told me that we would have PE later. Great I thought, I love PE. Soon the bell went and we had to go to registration then assembly. I found the assembly boring and it seemed to last for ages. I just wanted to go to PE.

Eventually the assembly finished and we rushed to the changing rooms. Once we had got changed we went into the gym and met Mr Reeves and Mr Giles. When I tried to go on the bus that was taking us to the field I couldn't get up the steps, but the kind bus driver lifted me on. Once I got on, the bus took us to the field where we played football and rugby. When I got back to school it was home time.

Chapter 3: Flat Stanley’s  Newport Adventure

When the bell went for the end of school I found that there were some other flat people in the school. One called Flat Sophie and one called Flat Chelsea. Flat Sophie said "Want to go down to the shops?" "Yes" I replied. As we were walking along I saw a massive building with a spire.
"What is that?" I asked my new friends.
Strawberry Icecream"It's a church called St Thomas's" said flat Chelsea.
As we got nearer I saw lots of people surrounding the church.
"What is that?" I asked.
"It's market day" replied Flat Sophie.
I really didn't want to spend a lot of time looking around a market since it was really hot. What I wanted was a cold strawberry ice-cream to cool me down so I pleaded with my new friends so we could go to the ice-cream shop. Flat Chelsea wasn't so keen and she was the one with the money. She did say we could get one later. Eventually we reached an ice-cream shop and we got one each. Whilst we were eating, Flat Chelsea asked "What can we do now?"
"Can we go to the quay?" questioned Flat Sophie.
I had a puzzled look on my face because I didn't know what a quay was. I thought that keys were for doors.

"What is a quay?" I asked.
"You will find out when we get there" replied Flat Sophie.
We quickly walked down the length of Newport high street and arrived at the quay. Looking around I saw some swans and ducks.
"Can we feed the ducks?" I asked.
"Yes" said Flat Chelsea.
Flat Sophie had to run and get some bread. When she returned we fed the swans and ducks.
"That was cool" I said, "Can we do it again?"
"Okay" replied Sophie and Chelsea.

We then headed up from the quay, through a field towards a park. As soon as I saw the park I shouted "cool" and ran into the park. I rushed to the slide, then went to the see-saw with Flat Chelsea and Flat Sophie. By now we were getting very hungry and decided to go to the nearby restaurant for our dinner. The dinner was good and delicious - fish and chips for everyone. It was then time for us to head home to bed.
"Off to bed" said Flat Sophie "You have a busy day tomorrow."

Chapter 4: Escaping the dinosaurs at Robin Hill

Early the next morning Josh and his mum came round to get me. We went into Newport town centre and got on a big orange bus. Since it was a really sunny day we were allowed to go upstairs - the bus had no roof. We headed out of the town centre and into the countryside. Suddenly Josh shouted at me to get up.
"Come on get off!" shouted Josh
"WHY!" I asked "are we at Robin Hill now?" .
"Yes, it is really good fun, there are lots of rides and you can get ice creams" answered Josh.
We rushed down the stairs of the bus and rang the bell, so the driver knew we wanted to get off. Once off the bus we ran up the gravel path towards the pay desk. Suddenly we heard a shout from behind us,
"Come back here you naughty boys." It was Josh's mum calling us back. .
She told us that we could run off once we got inside Robin Hill and that we could go off on our own until four O'clock. We quickly paid and ran off to find the rides leaving Josh's mum to wander on her own. As soon as we got in Josh said, "Let's go to the arcade to play on the 2p machines." Then we went to the climbing frame. Ahead of us was a very strange looking machine.
"Wow! Look at that ride. Do you want to go on it?" I asked quickly.
We headed to the Future machine which took us back to the future.
"That was amazing. That dinosaur was going to eat us. Luckily it missed. Then we went upside down on it". I shouted excitedly. Soon it was four o'clock and we made our way to the meeting point. It wasn't long until we heard Josh's mum shout out, "Come on we have to go home now."

We were back on the big orange bus, allowing me to continue to explore the island. This time I was with some new friend from Nodehill. They are called Jonny, Jason and Ziggy. As we travelled along the road I started getting a little bit scared. We were travelling along the edge of the Island. On one side of the road there was a steep cliff towering above us, to the other side there was a steep drop down into the sea. We past people carrying surf boards and we could hear the surf crashing onto the rocks below.

Eventually the bus pulled up outside a strange looking building and I followed the boys off.
"Hey! What's that?" I shouted to my friends.
"It's a big bear, this is the entrance to Black Gang Chine" replied Jonny, Jason and Ziggy all together.
Looking around I could see some sort of ride and I could also hear the ocean in the distance. We paid our money and went through the entrance.
"What can we do here? What is first" I asked the boys - I didn't care what we did, I wanted to try it all.
"We can go to the maze first" said Jason. "Then the rollercoaster" shouted Jonny and Ziggy.
"Where is the maze? Are you sure we will get out okay?" I asked.

I was slightly worried at this point, I really didn't want to get lost but I guess I could trust my new friend to help me get out. I reluctantly followed the boys, still muttering questions at them.
"Come on" Ziggy shouted at me. "No time to talk, let's go." We entered the massive entrance way and started to find our way out. We ended up getting a little bit lost and kept coming to dead ends. Eventually we reached the end just as I was starting to Dinosaurget a little bit worried.
"Finally we are out, it took 30 minutes" said Jonny.

We then headed over to the roller coaster. That was really good and I wasn't at all scared - but some other boys on the ride screamed like girls.

After that we went for a walk along to the beach to look for dinosaur fossils. Unfortunately none of us found anything although I was told that lots of people find loads of fossils. All too soon it was time to leave and catch the bus back to Newport. We went right through the middle of the island and saw loads of farms. Once back in Newport we had a KFC for dinner- YUM! I felt really tired after our busy day out so I was really pleased to get back into the house. We settled down and watched a DVD - with popcorn to eat of course.

Chapter 6: Time to go home

What an adventure I have had. I really enjoyed going to Black gang chine. It was great fun on the different rides. The trip around town was okay, the highlight was feeding the ducks and having ice-cream. I have just made my egg sandwich, remembering to cut the brown crust off. I will get this put into the envelope that I will be travelling in case I get hungry on my trip home. I am looking forward to getting home and having a rest. I hope my friends will enjoy reading this story about my trip. Maybe they will send me on another adventure...
