Kingsbridge Bookworms

Kingsbridge BookwormsOur book group began in March 2005. We started with about 12 members and the group just got bigger and bigger! At first we met in a corner of the Children’s Library, but we now take over the whole Children’s Library. We are mainly between 6 and 9 years old and some of us admit that we don’t find reading particularly easy, but we’re all mad about books!

We especially love doing and making things to do with books. We’ve made all sorts of things to help make reading fun – making bookmarks, fun things to decorate our pens and pencils and we’ve even made books to write our own stories in. That’s another thing we love to do – making up stories! We’ve done lots of things to give us ideas for the words and pictures. Some of our group have impressed M@x so much with our stories that he’s given us Goodie Bags!

BookwormGetting ideas for writing stories and learning some tips and tricks for drawing good pictures prepared us for shadowing the Kate Greenaway medal. We spent a couple of our meetings reading the books – well actually Wendy, the librarian, read most of them to us. Then we voted for our favourite. We thought that The Whisperer by Nick Butterworth should’ve won.

Wendy has taken some photos of us but hasn’t managed to get all of us into one picture. She says that her camera isn’t big enough!

Wendy says she has lots of plans for things to do in future meetings and has mentioned perhaps listening to poems and writing some of our own. She also discovered that we have some local authors living nearby. They write information books. We hope they will come to one of our meetings to tell us how they do it.

If you would like to join our group – just come along. We have a mix of boys and girls in the group, so everyone will feel welcome.
