The first thing to know is do you want to go to Antarctica or the Arctic Ocean. Antarctica – the South Pole - is a huge area of land with a whacking great dollop of ice on top whose average thickness is 1.2 miles! The Arctic Ocean – the North Pole - is, like any other ocean, sometimes as deep as 3 miles but because it is so cold in the winter, the top layer of sea water freezes. The bad news is the North Pole Ice Cap’s thickness is only three metres thick! Quite a difference I think you’ll all agree. So the question is do you want to go to the South Pole or the North Pole? Because of global warming the Antarctic ice has probably started to melt but it has definitely started melting very fast around the Arctic Ocean and will probably melt away completely in your lifetimes. So the next question is if you’re going to the North Pole, do you want to go as soon as possible so you can walk across the ice? Or do you want to wait until you are a grown up when the ice may have gone and you can sail there in a boat? I have walked to the South Pole and the North Pole, and if I were you, I’d find out as much as I could about Antarctica and the Arctic Ocean before making my decision.
