For this competition you had to send in a photograph, drawing or painting of something you love about Devon.. oh and tell me why you like! I had some mega entries and I would have liked to give everyone a prize but there can only be one winner - well three in this case - as there were three age groups. Ha, ha!

It was REALLY difficult to choose, so congratulations to all those listed below who have won fantastic Apollo bikes.

Emily, age 13 - Tiverton

Age group: 13-16 years

Well done Emily, age 13 from Tiverton.

This is an amazing drawing of the flaming tar barrels in Ottery St Mary. It shows Emily's love of local traditions brilliantly!

This is what Emily said her favourite thing about Devon is:

"When asked to explain what I love most about Devon I wasn’t quite sure where to begin. But then it hit me! Why not tell you about the fascinating traditions and rich legends that I’ve grown up listening, watching and loving. These are often forgotten or missed out, even though I believe that they are what brings people closer together and strengthens communities.

Emily, age 13 - TivertonFor example the amazing traditions of the flaming tar barrels in Ottery St Mary, the hot pennies thrown by the major into the streets of Honiton, or the New Year’s swim at Budleigh Salterton. These have all helped to shape communities, and mean so much to so many people. Devon also has lots of show’s to offer, that are traditionally held every year.

Next we come to the legends that have been passed down through generations, and loved by everyone. For isn’t fun found in many a good story? Stories like ‘Vixana the Witch of Vixen Tor’, ‘Jay’s Grave’ (which also has a tradition attached to it), ‘The Evil Rider’, ‘The Beast of Exmoor’ and many more. Ghost and fairy stories, some happy some scary, but all truly amazing.

I hope by writing this I have expressed my great appreciation for the wonderful traditions and legends that have shaped Devon. They are what make’s Devon truly special."
