| Samuel, age 11 - BarnstapleMeasle and the Slitherghoul by Ian Ogilvy I really enjoyed this book because it is a mix of real time and magic. Measle’s parents go away and he is left with a young wrathmonk, a nanny and two minor wizards. While his parents were away a dangerous monster gets loose. It sucks up any living animal, which makes it bigger. It captures a lot of people and their thoughts chase it after Measle. What follows is a chase between Measle and the Slitherghoul Samuel also reviewed: Bunker 10 by J.A. Henderson This is a brilliant book all about geniuses working for a top secret military base. What happens? Do they travel in time? Read it and find out. I give this book a score of 10 out of 10 because it takes you in, rides you around and dumps you out at the other end, where you pick it up again. I could not put it down it has so many twists and turns that you do not know what happens on the next page |
| Rebecca, age 9 - Holsworthy Horrid Henry and the Mega-mean time machine by Francesca Simon My favourite character is Horrid Henry because he is really imaginative and in the story it feels like he is in a time machine, Henry also sets up a Peter museum. What I like about this story is that it is like an adventure for Horrid Henry in a cardboard box which he thinks is a time machine but Perfect Peter wants to make it into a playhouse for very young children. What I dislike about this story is that Perfect Peter is always the centre of attention and is always getting his own way and when Henry is playing, Peter always shouts to get Henry in trouble. I enjoyed the story because it is really funny and it shows how much fun you can have with a cardboard box and your imagination. I would recommend this book to children between the ages of 6 years and 9 years. | |
Jessica , age 12 - BarnstapleRacehorse in the Rain by Lucy Daniels It is set a few weeks before Christmas. There is a raffle and two children, Mandy and James, sell the raffle tickets and the prize is a mystery prize. The prize was announced at a dinner party at a local pub just a couple of weeks before Christmas. When Mandy’s dad found out he had won first prize he was amazed. The first prize was to own a racehorse for the day. The big day was Boxing Day. When they went to see the horse before the big day they were gobsmacked, because as the horse was going over a jump at practice time he had a rough landing and unsaddled his rider. (But it wasn’t his fault as you find out later). His rider had a broken wrist and bruised his back, the horse got away with no injuries whatsoever (thank God). When it was the day of the horse’s race he had been doped by his previous rider who had fell off which is why his previous rider could not ride the race as well he was too weak. In the race he came last because he was not at his full speed because he was doped, that was a big surprise to everyone because he was supposed to come in the top 3 if not first. He was checked over by the vet who was actually the person who won the prize, they couldn’t work out that he had been doped the only way that they had found out was because the person who doped him admitted it.The reason I picked this book was because I had read a few Animal Ark books before and I also picked it because I love horses. I would give this book 10 out of 10 because it was brilliant and I could picture most of it in my head.

Harry, age 9 - Exeter Central Sabine, by Tim Kennemore This is a witty, page turning book. I would recommend it - five stars! It is all about two children, Molly and Josh. Molly, the girl is always in her own world thinking about her imaginary cucumber family. They find a website with computer pets on them. But are they computer pets? They are owners 6,666,666. that makes the computer pet come to life. One day a multi-coloured egg appears. It soon hatches into a baby dinosaur which causes them all sorts of troubles. First Molly buys all the toys ever and they soon don't have any money (points on the computer website) left. Soon they earn more though luckily. Adults don't know that though, they think it is a baby sickness bug they can't get rid of. Finally they find a way to give the pet away, send it to another person. They do this and soon settle down especially Luke. Unluckily Josh goes away to stay with his friend in the holidays. In that time Molly gets more computer pets away to stay with his friend in the holidays. In that time Molly gets more computer pets than ever. Cleverly Molly places them in the garden shed out of harms way. Soon Josh comes back from his friend and the family live peacefully for ever.
