Using Library Computers

Laptop computers

Policy Guidelines on the use of Laptop Computers in Devon Library and Information Services Libraries

The use of laptop computers for purposes of study, learning or research is normally acceptable in libraries subject to the following provisos:

  • Laptop computers operating on their own batteries may be used provided this does not cause inconvenience (eg noise) to other library users. Prior permission from library staff is not required, but if such use causes unreasonable inconvenience, staff have the authority to ask the user to stop or to move to an area where use will be less disruptive. In some libraries, specific areas may be identified where such use is allowed.
  • Permission for users to plug laptop computers into the library service's electrical supply will be granted only if:

A suitable socket (identified by staff) is available, in a position which does not conflict with other use and poses no health and safety hazards and

  1. The user has agreed to the terms of and signed a copy of the "Request to run personal laptop computer on library electrical supply" form, which has been countersigned by the Librarian in charge
  2. The user has paid the appropriate fee

In such instances where permission has been granted, the user will be expected to report to staff on each occasion before plugging the computer in and to pay the fee if not previously paid on the day in question.

Staff have the authority to ask such users to move on if someone else wishes to use the designated socket.

Notes

  • The fee is currently £1 per session, and will be reviewed periodically. Depending on demand in the library in question, a session may vary in length, but should never be less than one hour or more than one day.

The form need only be completed once by each user, and will then be filed for future reference. However, the user must report to staff on each occasion before plugging in, and pay the daily £1 fee if not previously paid on the day in question.
