Computers Adapted for Specific Needs - PC+

With the help of a BT Lifelong Learning grant, computers that can be used by people with learning, sensory or movement disabilities have been installed in 10 Devon Libraries.

Each PC+ computer has an adapted keyboard, a large trackerball mouse which can be used with hands or feet, screen magnification and a speech facility. The computers sit on adjustable tables which give room for wheelchairs and also have adjustable chairs and a lap tray.

Each of the computers is also equipped with Widgit "Writing with symbols" software which turns text into symbols and which is used and understood by many people with learning and communication difficulties. Libraries are using the software to produce welcome leaflets and library signs in symbols to help people with learning difficulties to find their way around the library.

All public access computers are also equiped with Cicero and Dolphin Supernova. Cicero is a program which enables a document to be scanned and turned into speech for partially sighted users.  It can also magnify text for those who have some sight. Dolphin Supernova allows magnification and  when using the computer as a word processor will speak each letter as it is typed. This can be changed so that it speaks the whole word. This program allows people with sight problems to use all the normal functions of a computer.

If you would like more information about the service or would be interested in working with Devon Libraries to extend computer access please contact:
