Holsworthy Museum of Rural Life

This small, local history museum is an Aladdin's cave of artefacts and implements relating to an agricultural town's rural past.

Holsworthy Museum of Rural Life

Life in the countryside was never easy, but over the centuries man invented a wide variety of items to help improve efficiency both in the fields and in the farmhouse or cottage.

The variety and usage of the articles in the collection cannot fail to fascinate those interested in England's pastoral history.

In 1999 the museum was completely refurbished and a new entrance porch built giving direct access from Holsworthy's main car park. The collection was re-grouped into themed displays including Holsworthy Town, the local railway, agriculture, medical and apothecary, local craftsmen and the world wars.

The Museum acts as a Service Point for Devon Record Office. Microfiche copies of some local parish registers (containing baptisms, marriages and burials), tithe maps and tithe apportionments are available for use by appointment.

Other resources which the Museum holds which are useful for family or local history research, and for which an appointment is needed, are the 1851 Devon Census CD, the 1881 Census CD, and IGI microfiche for Devon and Cornwall (some other counties can be provided by prior arrangement). There are also typed transcripts of the Holsworthy 1841 and 1861 census.
