This important market town has had its share of local personalities and dramatic changes. The museum provides a glimpse into the way the town was shaped over the centuries, with displays illustrating key points of the town's rich history. The museum's art collection includes many oil paintings and watercolours, and of special interest is the fine art pottery from Aller Vale which once belonged to Frank Findlay, the company's London agent.

The museum has a wealth of artefacts from the era of the Great Western Railway, and taking pride of place is a working signal box, giving you the opportunity to experience some of the thrill of the great days of the steam railway. The museum has an interesting collection of recordings, so you can hear the recollections of the real people for whom the railway was a way of life. Museum volunteers are on hand to enthuse about the collection, and are always eager to hear your own contribution to the history of the GWR.
