A Week in the Life of Exeter Central Library

Photographer Tim Burton

Photographer Tim Burton worked in Exeter Central Library for four days as part of the Week in the Life of Exeter Central Library project.

During this time Tim made a thorough photographic documentation of the library, examining its particular role within the city of Exeter. He was particularly interested in the different architectural characters of the building. You can see some of Tim's work below.

Staff found Tim in places they least expected to see him – he got up on the roof, went down to the stacks, and saw the remarkable in what they take for granted.

Tim also ran workshops for school parties from West Exe Technology College and St Peter’s School. After a basic introduction to digital photography and compositional techniques, Tim sent the groups round the buildings, inside and out, to capture their own perspective on the library. They came up with some very interesting pictures – a really fresh glimpse of life in the library.  Several students entered their work in the competition, and some outstanding entries won first, second and third prize.
