A Perfectly Good Man - Patrick GalePatrick Gale (by Adrian Lourie)An Evening With Patrick Gale - Exeter Central Library

Thursday 28th June, 7.30pm

Patrick Gale’s fourteen novels include The Whole Day Through and the Richard and Judy bestseller, Notes From an Exhibition. He joins us at Exeter Central Library to talk about his latest novel, A Perfectly Good Man, which tells the story of a beleaguered priest in West Cornwall and his long suffering family.

Patrick was born on 31 January 1962 on the Isle of Wight. He has never had a grown-up job. For three years he lived at a succession of addresses, from a Notting Hill bedsit to a crumbling French chateau. While working on his first novels he eked out his slender income with odd jobs; as a typist, a singing waiter, a designer’s secretary, a ghost-writer for an encyclopedia of the musical and, increasingly, as a book reviewer. His first two novels, The Aerodynamics of Pork and Ease were published by Abacus on the same day in June 1986. The following year he moved to Camelford near the north coast of Cornwall and began a love affair with the county that has fed his work ever since.

Tickets cost £4 from Exeter Phoenix Box Office (01392 667080), Waterstones (Roman Gate) or on the door.

2011 Programme Highlights:

Award winning thriller writer Robert Goddard visits Exeter Central Library

Robert Goddard charmed his audience at Exeter Central Library on a recent visit to introduce his latest novel ‘Blood Count’. This is Robert’s twenty-second novel and all have been bestsellers. His first, ‘Past Caring’, was published in 1986 and became an instant bestseller. Since then his books have enthralled readers and critics alike with their edge-of-the-seat pace and their labyrinthine plotting. The majority of his novels have been Sunday Times Top Ten bestsellers in the UK and Robert is regarded as one of Britain’s premier historical/crime thriller authors.

Waterstones set up stall in the library for those wishing to purchase books and have them signed by the author. Robert gave a very entertaining and witty talk on his life as an author. He then spent time chatting with his audience whilst they enjoyed a complimentary glass of wine in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Lunchtime concerts at Exeter Central Library

Ruth AvisThis series of lunchtime concerts held at Exeter Central Library's Music Room last autumn delighted its audiences. The series was part of the Exeter Library Live programme of events and included performances from guitarist Clive Betts, cellist Hilary Boxer and contralto Carolyn Harries amongst others. Audiences were treated to live performances in an intimate atmosphere with light refreshments included in the admission price.

Ruth Avis has kindly agreed that we can use a track from her programme 'Songs for flute and piano' which was performed on Monday 18th November. The extract is the third movement, 'presto giocoso' from Francis Poulenc's 'Sonata for flute and piano' (1957). Ruth plays the flute and was very ably accompanied by James Keefe on the piano.

You can hear a sample of the music performed on Audioboo.
