Description: Can we tell each other stories that help us turn and face some of the greatest challenges of our times? In the workshops you will work with some brilliant writers, artists and scientists to create stories around the themes of Love, Leadership, Food, Technology and Justice. Description: Beth Reekles, currently a student at the University of Exeter, published her first Young Adult romance novel when she was 17, and has published two novels since then. Internet-savvy, Beth began writing online, and was “discovered” by her publisher. She’ll answer questions about her own writing career and offer advice to young would-be novelists.

Description: Authors Kevin Brooks and Anthony McGowan discuss the subject of violence in teenage fiction. Do authors have a duty to reflect the real world of teenage violence? Is there a temptation to glamourise the subject? Do authors too easily fall back on valence to get themselves out of a narrative hole? Two award-winning writers of young adult fiction go head to head to thrash out the issues.

Description: An examination of the work of Roald Dahl and how his childhood experiences might have influenced his writing. The show, performed by Nick Wood, will compare events described in tales from Roald Dahl’s childhood with characters in his books. He suggests how we all have something within ourselves to write about and that these stories should be told. The show will include the use of puppets inspired by the illustrations of Quentin Blake, and some audience participation.
