Sidmouth Chatterbooks

Sidmouth ChatterbooksWelcome to the Sidmouth Chatterbooks, we are a small but lively book club! Our club started in April 2009 and we have been having lots of fun and lots of laughs ever since. Everybody enjoys getting involved and having the chance to express our opinions. We range in age from 7-11 years old. At each meeting we all take home the same book to read so that we can chat about it next time.

We usually spend the first half of the meeting talking about the books we have just read. Often we get involved in activities based around the book, such as writing a letter to the author.

The second half of the session is taken up with a variety of activities. Here are some of the activities we have enjoyed so far:

Library shopping list:
We were all sent out into the library to find items on a library ‘shopping list’.

Guess the author:
We were asked to guess authors from their photographs.

Debates:
We asked the question “Who is a better character, Charlie Bone or Harry Potter?”

Poster making:
We made a poster for the library to encourage other young people to read the books we have read for book club.

Book reviews:
We write book reviews at home, on one occasion the writer of the best review won a £5 book voucher and on another occasion someone won a goody bag from M@x.

Judging a book by its cover:
We love talking about book covers and giving our opinions on them, for example, does it catch your eye or does it suit the story?

In November we all took home a book of poetry and were asked to choose our favourite poem. When we met in December we read our favourite poems aloud to one another.

Some of the books we have read so far are shown below, the overall group favourites have been ‘Midnight for Charlie Bone’ and ‘Whispering to Witches’. Also we enjoy receiving Chatterbooks goodies and the occasional free book such as ‘The Killer Underpants’ by Michael Lawrence.
