Book Start

Mum reading to baby

Devon Libraries are pleased to be involved in Bookstart, the national scheme run in conjunction with Book Trust, the independent book charity. The programme was launched in Devon in 1999 and aims to promote enjoyment of books by providing three free packs of books and information for all pre-school children.

The first one, the Bookstart Baby pack, is handed out by health visitors at the nine to twelve month health check. Health visitors also present the second pack which is called Bookstart Plus, and is for children of two to two and a half years. The third pack, Treasure Chest, is distributed by pre-schools to children aged three.

There are also special packs called Booktouch and Bookshine for children with sight or hearing impairments, and these are available through health visitors or through libraries.

If any children have missed receiving any of these packs they are welcome to enquire in their local library and staff will be pleased to help.

For further information please visit the national Bookstart website.
