As with many other classics, the story of Rebecca is often more familiar to us from film and television, and has perhaps the most famous opening lines of any twentieth century novel………

Orson Welles produced a radio adaptation of the story, and later Alfred Hitchcock filmed it.

Du Maurier began it in 1937 while with her husband in Egypt and it remains her most popular work.
