Partnership Working
Introduction
We are committed to working in partnership with other local heritage-based organisations in order to provide the most comprehensive public service possible.
Here are some examples of the ways we work in partnership…
Beaford Photographic Archive
The Beaford Archive is housed in the Record Office and uses part of our strongroom for storage.
We often use the Beaford Archive’s old photographs in exhibitions, and for educational work, talks and group visits.
Our major exhibition for the first half of 2001, Long to Rain Over Us, was a joint Record Office and Beaford Archive project.
Barnstaple Local Studies Centre
As part of our day-to-day work in the Local Studies Centre, we have very close relationships with Barnstaple Local Studies Library and the North Devon Athenaeum.
All three departments operate the main desk, answering public enquiries by phone or in person on a rota system.
We also deal with student projects on a joint basis (See Educational service), as well as organising and supervising school visits together. Talks and group visits are also often dealt with on a similar joint basis.
For more information on each of the departments comprising the Barnstaple Local Studies Centre.
Service Points
We operate a service point in conjunction with and on the premises of the North Devon Maritime Museum, Appledore, in which microfiche copies of parish registers and tithe records are made available for the immediate area, and to which a member of our staff is seconded on a monthly basis to advise the public.
North Devon On Disk
This is a joint archive of images, documents, objects, family photographs, stories and memories gleaned not only from the Barnstaple Local Studies Centre and local museums but also from local people. This archive has gradually been transformed into a map-centred database.
In addition to the main archive, each museum is taking part in various theme-based community projects; moreover, many of the participating bodies have been given the chance to create their own associated websites.
The steering group for the project comprises Devon County Council (in part represented by Tim Wormleighton, Senior Archivist at the North Devon Record Office), North Devon District Council, Torridge District Council and Beaford Arts Centre. The participating bodies are as follows: North Devon Record Office, North Devon Athenaeum, North Devon Local Studies Library, Exeter University, Beaford Photographic Archive, Braunton & District Museum, Burton Art Gallery, Combe Martin Museum, Holsworthy Museum, Ilfracombe Museum, Lyn & Exmoor Museum, Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon, North Devon Maritime Museum, South Molton Museum, Torrington Museum, Barnstaple Heritage Centre and Mortehoe Heritage Centre.
