Petitions for an elected mayor of Devon

The Local Government Act 2000 provides that persons who favour a Council having an elected mayor may petition that Council.

If the petition is signed by a number equal to 5% of the local government electors for the Council’s area, then a Council must hold a referendum on the question.

The total number equal to 5% of the local government electors for the County of Devon shown in the revised registers published by District Councils and listed below as at 15 February 2011 is 29,449 and shall apply to any petitions to the County Council submitted between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012.

The figures outlined above for individual District Councils also will have effect for the purposes of determining the validity of Petitions in the same period to those Councils.

Any such petition can be delivered in person or sent by post to the appropriate address, as shown above.
