Tavistock Updated Profile 2010

In 2006 the County Council’s Strategic Intelligence unit produced a series of profile documents for the 29 Devon Town areas. These profiles provided a statistical overview, based on a series of facts and figures, of what life is like in each area.

This update document describes how things have changed since the original profiles were produced. It follows the samestructure with information grouped in to a number of themes covering social, economic and environmental well-being. It isdesigned to be read in conjunction with the original baseline profile to give a more complete picture of the area.

Tavistock Mosaic Profile

The Strategic Intelligence team at DCC has produced detailed profiles - with maps and graphs - of the 29 Devon Town areas using ‘Mosaic’ classifications.  These use a range of sources to identify neighbourhoods at the individual postcode level.

Mosaic Public Sector is designed to identify groupings of consumer behaviour for households and postcodes.  The methodology used is unique to Experian, and has been redefined during many years of creating classifications using data from different sources and different levels of geography. Around 54% is sourced from the 2001 census and 46% includes the edited Electoral Roll, Experian Lifestyle Survey information and Consumer Credit Activity, Post Office Address File, Shareholders Register, House Price and Council Tax Information and ONS local area statistics.

Mosaic classifies postcodes into 11 Mosaic Groups and then subdivides them further into 61 detailed Mosaic Types.   In each type there are a number of key features which make each category distinctive and are useful to bear in mind when devising communications concerning them.  These are subjective and are intended to highlight key issues rather than to be comprehensive.

It is strongly recommended that each profile is read in conjunction with the Appendix – Guide to Mosaic Groups and Types image - PDF icon (89KB - pdf help).

Tavistock Population Profile

The Strategic Intelligence section at DCC has produced detailed population projection profiles to the year 2021 - with maps, charts and tables - for the 29 Devon town areas using the 'Chelmer' Model.

The Chelmer Population and Housing Model (CPHM) is the leading British demographic regional housing model developed by the Population and Housing Research Group (PHRG) . It has been purchased by over 50 organisations, including local authorities, the Housebuilders Federation and various consultancy firms.

Each profile shows how much the area is expected to expand and in which age groups - generally in Devon the population is expected to be getting older but these profiles give a detailed local breakdown. Although figures need to be treated with caution at this scale, this is the first time that data lower than District level has been made available

Tavistock Place Survey

The 2008 Place Survey provides information on people's perceptions of their local area and the local services they receive.  The survey collects information on 18 national indicators (NIs) for local government, used to measure local government performance for county councils, metropolitan councils, London boroughs, unitary authorities and district councils. The survey was designed primarily for use at the local level.  National and regional figures are produced for benchmarking purposes.

The survey differed from the previous Best Value General Satisfaction Surveys in that it was solely focused on perceptions of living within an area rather than satisfaction with specific local authority services.  The place survey therefore was intended to be:

• Relevant to anyone living in the area

• Not specific to any one agency or service

• Not specific to any particular client group

The survey contained a standard set of questions, developed by the Audit Commission and CLG in consultation.  It is a statutory requirement that local authorities use the standard survey, with any additional questions only inserted at the end of the questionnaire.

Unlike other surveys (e.g. the Citizenship Survey), the Place Survey was not run by a single contractor under a single contract – each local authority was responsible for running its own survey.  Unweighted data were supplied by councils to the Audit Commission. The data were then weighted and provisional results for national indicators were sent to councils in February 2009.  Following a review of the survey conducted by Communities and Local Government, adjustments were made to the provisional data results and confidence intervals,  as it would not have been possible to replicate their weighting system for smaller areas, such as Devon Towns and hinterlands (in these reports), the results used in this report have not been weighted.
