Strategic Health Authorities are charged with creating a coherent strategic framework for the development of services across the full range of local NHS organisations.

The South West Penisula Strategic Health Authority is not responsible for providing health services directly. Local health services are provided by Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and NHS Trusts. PCTs are also responsible for commissioning health services on behalf of their local population and for managing the local services provided by GPs, dentists, pharmacists and opticians.
