"I was employed as a Technician in the newly established Waste Engineering Team and was quickly promoted to the post of Senior Technician. Working in EDG I was involved with all stages of a project from the initial design brief through to scheme completion and commissioning.  This work includes surveying, feasibility design, preparation of planning applications, detailed design, drafting contract documents, construction supervision and negotiations with contractors.

From the summer of 2006, I was given the responsibility for the day to day management of the Waste Engineering Team, delivering projects ranging from small improvement schemes to large recycling centres valued in excess of £1M.

Since joining DCC I have been given the opportunity to develop my experience and career with the support of my peers and management.  This has led to my recent appointment as Principal Engineer, leading a team responsible for a wide range of highway improvements across south Devon. As the role of the County Council is so wide ranging there are a great deal of opportunities across a number of engineering disciplines.

Working for the Waste Engineering Team I was responsible for a variety of projects including Winkleigh Leachate Treatment Scheme, the refurbishment of Brunel Road Recycling Centre and the new Bideford Recycling Centre. The project at Bideford was particularly interesting as it was the first site in Devon to be based on a ‘split-level’ design.

My new post of Principal Engineer is a big change to my day to day work load and as such will take a while for me to find my feet.  With the role of the County Council constantly changing it is very hard to anticipate the future.  What I do know is that if it continues as the first 5 years I cannot predict where I will be in 5 years time."
