Research Service at North Devon Record Office

Introduction

If you are unable to come into the North Devon Record Office to undertake your own research, or if you simply do not have the time to complete your studies, we can offer our research service.  Most research requests are dealt with at Exeter, but in cases where the records are only available at the North Devon Record Office requests can be taken at Barnstaple and the research carried out there.

Payment for any research should be made in advance.  Please make cheques payable to ‘Devon County Council’.

Service charges

  • Basic charge £20.00 per hour
  • Initial half hour’s search £12.00
  • Cheque handling charge where payment is not made in sterling £7.00

The above charges include limited numbers of photocopies and printouts made as part of the search.

Response times and other points

When your research request is received, we will send you acknowledgement of this by post or email. Please note that the research staff carry out research requests in the order in which they are received, but this is a popular service and you must expect delays. We aim to send the research report to you within four weeks of receipt, but factors such as sickness, staff holidays or an unusually high number of research requests may occasionally lead to a greater backlog of work.

If, in our opinion, suitable research material is not available, your money will be returned in full. However, we cannot offer partial refunds. Where searches take less time than the initial payment allows for, we can provide credits which may be used against future searches, printout requests, etc.

If you have any queries regarding the direction of a search, the documents to be consulted, etc., feel free to ask.
