Safer caring - living with traumatised children and managing risk

Learning outcomes:

Adapted from Kate Cairns and Eileen Fursland’s training programme. This two day course builds on the core training safe care course. It considers in greater depth how carers can manage safe care with traumatised children.

This is a two day course.

Day 1

  • To recognise the impact of traumatic stress on child development.
  • To understand what people need to recover from trauma.
  • To understand the impact of living and working with traumatised children.
  • To think about how to prevent and treat secondary stress disorders.

Day 2

  • Understand the concept of hazards, risks and vulnerability.
  • Recognise the hazards of living and working with traumatised children.
  • Understand how to assess risk to the child, carers and others.
  • Think about how to manage these risks.
