If you are not comfortable reporting to the police

Sexual assault referral centres (SARCs) can offer free and confidential help, support, examination and counselling. Within the sexual assault referral centre there are independent sexual violence advisors (ISVAs). An ISVA can help you to report to police and support you through the criminal justice process.

SARC locations are:

  • Plymouth SARC - Twelves Company - if you are located in Plymouth, North Cornwall, South Hams or West Devon. Tel: 08458 121212
  • Devon and Torbay SARC - The Oak Centre - if you are located in Exeter, East or Mid Devon or Teignbridge. Tel: 01392 436967
  • Cornwall SARC - The Willow Centre - if you are located in Cornwall. Tel: 01872 272059

You can also seek help or advice from other services such as counsellors, sexual health centres, (called GU clinics), your GP or a hospital, and Victim Support.

Sexual Abuse Examination Service for Children and Young People

NHS Devon and Torbay Care Trust have commissioned G4S Forensic and Medical Services (UK) to deliver a service for children and young people that are have been, or are suspected of being, sexually abused. The service is provided by a team of local paediatric trained forensic medical examiners, paediatricians and specialist nurses.

The service provides opportunity for either an acute or historic (non-acute) assessment. An acute examination, with the collection of forensic evidence, is provided for a sexual assault which may have taken place in the last 7 days. An historic examination occurs after this timeframe to ascertain the presence of any injuries. Assessments involve development of a plan for ongoing care, with onward referral to appropriate other professional and agencies.

There is often concern that examinations are subjecting the child to further abuse. This is not the case if done sensitively and assessments have an important role in providing reassurance to both parent and child.

Referrals are made via the Devon Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) on 0345 1551071 and in Torbay via 01803 208100.

In addition, we are pleased to discuss queries prior to a referral on 01371 812694. Alternately, you can contact Dr Catherine Golding on 07919 046359, Dr Stephen Richardson on 07854 124397 or Sharon Sparkes (Specialist Nurse) on 07876 794080.
