Specialist services for men who experience domestic violence and abuse
Statistics indicate that domestic violence is a predominantly male on female crime. However, this does not deny the very real problems faced by men experiencing domestic violence: the perceived stigma and sense of isolation may make it very difficult to report this crime or seek help. Across Devon there are specialist domestic violence workers who provide risk assessment, safety planning and advocacy services for men who are experiencing or who have experienced domestic violence and abuse, offering information, advice and access to a range of support services. The aim is to increase men’s safety whether they want to stay in the relationship or not. The service is free and confidential.
Support is offered to all men irrespective of sexual orientation, race ethnicity culture and disability. It is recognised that men from these communities may face additional barriers and challenges and workers are trained to ensure that everyone’s individual needs are being met. Other agencies are also offered advice and information on how to respond to disclosures of domestic violence and abuse from male victims.
