A two day multi-agency accredited course (OCN) for practitioners whose work engages them with children and young people, including Working Together Staff Group 3 and above. Delegates need to have attended the Tackling Domestic Violence & Abuse 1 day Foundation Course before attending this course. Delegates will need to attend two training days (9.00am-5.00pm) and commit 14 hours to complete a workbook (3½ hours per week for a four week period).

Cost of the course:

Most statutory agencies within Devon will receive this two day training for £150 inclusive.

The exceptions to this are:

1 Delegates who work for all statutory and voluntary agencies from Torbay, Plymouth or outside Devon, who will be charged the full cost of £280 per delegate;

2) Delegates who work in the private sector (within or outside Devon), who will be charged £280 per delegate.

3) Delegates who work for most voluntary agencies within Devon (excluding Torbay or Plymouth), who will receive the training at no charge (but only three free spaces are offered per course).

NB There is a cancellation charge of £300 if 3 weeks' notice is not provided.

Aims

• To increase understanding of the links between domestic violence and child abuse
• To raise awareness of the impact of domestic violence on children and young people, including how that impact may manifest itself over the stages of child development
• To expand knowledge of the risks that can be presented to children and young people experiencing domestic violence, especially post-separation violence
• To increase understanding of how best to offer help and support to children and young people
• To raise standards of practice, both individually and collectively
• To provide current best practice guidelines and legislation to keep safe children that have witnessed or experienced domestic violence

Objectives

By the conclusion of the two-day course, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the links between domestic violence and child abuse
• Appreciate the range of ways that domestic violence can affect children and young people
• Recognise the connection between the intention of the perpetrator to the effects and feelings of children and young people within an abusive environment
• Describe whether and how contact with an abusing parent can be made safe for a child who has experienced domestic violence
• Identify risks from abusing parents that may present to children and non-abusing parents, and carry out risk assessments
• Consider techniques for engaging with and assisting children and young people that have experienced domestic violence
• Provide strategies and practices to protect and safeguard those experiencing domestic violence

Please Note

This course is designed to raise awareness and increase understanding of the impact of domestic violence on children and young people. It is not a course that will specifically train participants to be specialist domestic violence children's workers. It is essential that you have completed the Tackling Domestic Violence & Abuse 1 day Foundation Course prior to attending this course.

Examples of best practice will be provided, such as therapeutic techniques and education models. Sample children's programmes will be available for participants to take away as resources.

However, participants who do not have designated responsibility for working directly with children are advised to exercise caution.  This course will not create therapeutic children's workers!

This course will use a range of learning styles and techniques that will build on Level 1 training. Some examples are:

• revision
• rehearsing
• consolidation of knowledge
• critical dialogue.

These workshops are participative - designed to be active and engaging.
