Children with Additional Needs

Early Response and Further Response Services

Early Response Service

Each area has an Early Response Service which uses the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) to assess each child's need. Staff then work together using a Team Around the Child (TAC) approach; where a range of professionals work in partnership with children and families to get the desired outcomes.

Staff working in the Early Response Service include:

After your assessment, you may find that your family does not need any formal services from us. We can still give you a range of information on other services and support that may be available.

Further Response Service

The Further Response Service manages the cases of children and young people with more complex additional needs. The Further Response Service is also responsible for linking effectively with other services to make sure that children and their families get the range of support they need to meet their needs.

Staff working in the Further Response Service include:

  • mental health staff
  • community children’s nurses
  • occupational therapists
  • social care staff
  • specialist children’s centre staff
  • transition workers
  • keyworker support staff.

If you have been assessed as needing services for your child and family you may want to know more about:

  • Fair Access to Short Breaks. This is Devon's process of agreeing a family’s entitlement for support. This support could be Direct Payments, 1-1 support in accessing mainstream services or residential respite support.
  • Direct Payments. This money given to families who have been assessed as needing social care support, or in some cases equipment, and would like to arrange and pay for these services themselves instead of receiving them directly from Devon County Council.
