Support and Advisory Teacher Service

Speech, Language and Communication Needs Team

Previously known as CIDs

We support children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) as their main area of difficulty

We are a team of Advisory Teachers, Outreach Teachers and Speech and Language Therapists working within the LDP.

The team

4 advisory teachers:

  • Sally Dyer: Exeter/mid Devon, East Devon Secondary Schools
  • Diane Richards: West Devon, South Hams, South Devon and Exeter Secondary Schools
  • Jan Coutu: North Deon Primary Schools
  • Jo Andrews: Exeter and East Devon

2 Outreach Teachers:

  • Sarah Miller based at Newtown Language Centre
  • Shirley O’Connor based at the Barton Language Centre in Torbay working in South Devon

Speech and Language Therapists in each area:

  • Val Brooks based in Exeter
  • Louise Carter based in North Devon
  • Maria Howarth based in South Devon
  • Locality therapists in other areas.

The children that we support will be:

  • In Mainstream schools
  • At Key Stage 1, 2 or in Secondary School
  • Have specific Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties/Language as their main area of need.
  • Already assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Experencing difficulties accessing the curriculum due to their language impairment
  • Often experiencing social difficulties.

Our support will include:

  • Observations in the classroom and individual work with children
  • Advice on appropriate strategies and differentiation
  • Meetings with staff and parents
  • Liaising with other professionals
  • Identifying appropriate targets for IEPs
  • Sometimes attending Annual Reviews, especially transition reviews
  • Setting up, planning and modelling language/communication groups
  • Training in individual schools
  • Whole day training (see list below)

Training

  • We offer 4 Stage training for primary Schools and 2 Stage training for secondary schools.
  • In addition we offer training on Communication Friendly Schools, Mind Maps and Using  Symbols (Communicate in Print)

Primary

  • Stage 1: Raising awareness and general strategies
  • Stage 2: Looking at language in more detail and strategies for specific areas
  • Stage 3: Differentiation and practical activities
  • Stage 4: language and Emotional development

Secondary

  • Stage 1: Raising Awareness/strategies/ differentiation
  • Stage 2: Language and Emotional development/using ICT

Local and school staff will be able to refer children, using the referral form to: -
