Physical Disability

Commission for Social Care Inspection

The Commission for Social Care Inspection is the new independent inspectorate for social care in England.

In January/February 2006 we will be visiting  Devon County Council to inspect how Devon County Council’s Social Services provides services for disabled people.  We will be looking at services provided for people aged between 16 and 64 who are physically disabled and/or who have sensory loss or who prefer to call themselves Deaf or blind.

The inspection will be carried out by  Silu Pascoe and Tim Willis, CSCI Service Inspectors,  Leonard Cunningham, Healthcare Commission Reviewer and Yvonne Jones, the Disabled Assessor.

Service Users

We will want to hear from people who use services and, where possible, their families and friends. The sort of questions we will ask are:

  • What do you think about the services?
  • Do you get all the information you want?
  • What do you like about the services?
  • What do you not like about the services?
  • Would you like to suggest any changes?

If there is something you would like to say, this is your chance.  You can talk to us in private if you wish.

If there are things people do not wish to talk about that is all right.  You do not have to talk to us if you don’t want to.  You may prefer to give us your views by using our questionnaires available through our website at: http://www.csci.org.uk/disability.htm

Managers and Staff

We will be talking to managers and staff, who provide services, about their work and what they try to do to help people live as independently as possible.  We will also want to make sure that the people who use the services, and their relatives and friends, are involved in decisions, plans and the services that are provided to give them support.

Reporting back

When we have done all this we will write a report which says what we think and makes recommendations for improvement to services. We will meet senior managers to discuss what we have found and our report will go to a meeting of county councillors, at which time the report will be made public.

When all of the inspections are completed (there are others going on in other parts of England) a national report will be written which will be helpful in improving services for other disabled people and their families and friends in the future.
