Children With Special Needs

Direct payments

For parents and carers of children and young people with disabilities

What is Direct Payments?

Direct Payments is money given to you so that you can arrange, choose and buy some of the services and support your family has been assessed as needing.

This gives you greater control over your family life, as you decide how care is arranged and provided. The money comes from social care funds and should be used to meet social care needs and not health or education needs.

Why should I have Direct Payments?

Direct Payments mean that you are in control. You can choose:

  • who supports you
  • how they support you
  • when you have support.

People who have Direct Payments enjoy more flexibility and choice to help meet the needs of their child.
