Devon Metrology Laboratory

About the Laboratory

About the Laboratory

Devon Metrology Laboratory is part of Devon County Council's Trading Standards Service, and is based in County Hall in Exeter.  One of the Service's primary duties is the enforcement of Weights and Measures legislation, to ensure that goods sold by quantity are weighed or measured accurately.

The Laboratory was originally set up to ensure that Trading Standards' testing equipment complied with legal requirements.  We have since diversified into calibrating weights and measures used in manufacturing processes by industry throughout the United Kingdom.

The Laboratory operates under the terms of a rigorous quality system and has been accredited to ISO17025 for mass calibration by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) since 1999.  The Trading Standards Service has also been awarded a Government Charter Mark for excellence in customer service.

The Laboratory benefits from being able to draw on the knowledge and expertise of a range of experts in the fields of metrology and trading standards law.  We can offer our expertise on a wide range of subjects, the vast majority of the advice being free of charge.

Mass calibrations are conducted in a temperature and humidity controlled environment to ensure accuracy and repeatability.  The instruments used to monitor the environment are traceable to National Standards via testing by UKAS accredited laboratories.
