When applying for grants you will need to consider sources of matched funding at the outset: this applies to European money in particular which is generally only available for around half the costs of a project - the remainder needs to be found from other sources and is known as "matched funding". A range of local, regional and national funds can be used to match European grants as long as they do not also originate from Europe. Private-sector funding may also be eligible as matched funding.

Recognition is growing within funding circles of the value of 'in-kind' resources: this can be volunteer time or professional services offered free or at cost. Check with the funding organisation for particular rules or rates.
