Lapford The word encaustic means "to burn in". Encaustic Art, or hot wax painting was practiced by Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians more than 2500 years ago. Today's technique involves melting pigmented beeswax onto the plate of a small iron and smoothing it on to paper, much like applying plaster to a wall. Because of the nature of the technique, no two pictures can be the same. Carol's fascination for the art began after seeing a demonstration by a French Canadian in 1985. While studying for City and Guilds in Patchwork and Quilting in 1996 she experimented with the technique as part of her course work and hasn't looked back. In August 2001 Rowland Originals was founded. At present she has a range of designs sold as cards. She also sells prints and original framed work. Carol is now working towards combining the encaustic art with the textile work.
