Information for Customers

Advantages for Consumers

If you need work carried out and want to use a business recognised for good service then look for our CustomerFirst logo. Devon County Council Trading Standards Service has introduced the CustomerFirst Scheme in an attempt to promote the highest standards of trading in the County. Members of the Scheme undertake to offer a customer - friendly service and to operate their business in a legal, honest and fair way.

Trading Standards Audit

All businesses that apply to join the CustomerFirst Scheme are first subject to an audit by the Trading Standards Service. We also check the level of complaints previously made to this Service regarding the business. If after carrying out these checks we are satisfied the business meets our criteria then they will be invited to become a member of the Scheme. They will be issued with a window sticker to display on their business premises and a certificate of membership.

Code of Practice

All members will be expected to abide by our Code of Practice. We monitor any complaints made about members on a regular basis. There is a disciplinary procedure for any members who fail to comply with the guiding principles of the Scheme.

Aims of the CustomerFirst Scheme

  • To promote fair trading throughout the County of Devon
  • To improve consumer confidence in Devon businesses.
  • To ensure that consumers receive a high standard of customer service from members.
  • To assist members to fulfil their obligations in relation to legal, honest and fair business practices.
  • To improve compliance with trading standards legislation.
  • For information concerning the limitations of the scheme, please read the Word of Warning.
