Components of the Process
Checks
These include proof of identity, Criminal Records Bureau checks on all in household over 16, government checks, County Council records, probation and other local agencies, other local authorities or agencies where previous application made, disqualification under Disqualification from Caring for Children Regulations.
References
Two nominated referees to be interviewed, with the option of interviewing a member of the wider family; written references from present/most recent employer.
Enquiries of adult children living away from home; previous partners; voluntary/leisure pursuits involving children; school comments from school attended by applicants’ child(ren) as appropriate..
Medical Reports
Health report including aspects of mental, physical and emotional health.
Group Work
Report on participation in training sessions (which will have been shared with applicants) on oral communication skills and attitudes to/views on key fostering issues.
Observation
An ongoing part of assessment by workers in all settings, considered alongside factual information and discussions.
Visits to Applicants’ Home
Applicants will be seen in their own homes in order to assess both the suitability of the accommodation and to get a sense of the physical and emotional environment they provide.
The worker will meet the entire household to explore relationships of all the members and to assess demands made on applicants. Health & Safety awareness-raising checklist.
Discussion with Applicants
Gathering of factual information, and exploration of how applicant’s life experience has enabled and will enable him/her to develop the qualities, skills and aptitudes necessary for the fostering task.
